What is AES Encryption?

AES Encryption tool encrypts and decrypts data using the AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) algorithm โ€” an authenticated encryption scheme that provides both confidentiality and integrity. Data is encrypted entirely in your browser.

When to use this tool

  • Encrypting sensitive data before storage or transmission
  • Decrypting AES-encrypted messages or files
  • Protecting configuration values with a passphrase
  • Securing data in transit between systems

How it works

Derives a 256-bit key from your passphrase using PBKDF2 with a random salt and 100,000 iterations. Encrypts the plaintext with AES-256-GCM, producing a ciphertext that includes an authentication tag (16 bytes) to detect tampering. The salt, IV, and tag are prepended to the output.

Security Guidelines

  • Use a strong passphrase โ€” the security of AES-256-GCM depends on key strength
  • Never reuse the same passphrase and plaintext combination without a new salt
  • AES-256-GCM is authenticated โ€” decryption will fail if the ciphertext is tampered with
  • Store salts and IVs with the ciphertext (they are not secret)
  • For password-based encryption, PBKDF2 with 100k+ iterations is recommended by NIST
